The Enmity of Wives and Children The enmity of wives and children mentioned in the Qur'ān — “Indeed, among your wives and children are enemies to you, so beware of them” — is not enmity in the sense of hatred or hostility, as some may misunderstand. Rather, as Ibn Al-Qayyim explains in his ‘Uddah (p. 64): “It is the enmity that stems from love, which prevents one from performing duties toward Allāh — such as hijrah, jihad, seeking knowledge, giving charity, and other acts of religion and righteousness.” In other words, it refers to the influence of those closest to you when it deters you from religious obligations and virtuous deeds. This is a significant matter. As mentioned in the ḥadīth: ((الولد مبخلة مجبنة مجهلة محزنة)) “Children make one stingy, cowardly, ignorant, and sad.” Likewise, many wives have been the cause of a man losing his religion, his manners, and even his discernment. The Prophet ﷺ said: ((ما رأيت من ناقصات عقل ودين أذهب لعقل الرجل الحازم من إحداكن)) “I have not seen anyone among women who diminishes the reason and religion of a resolute man more than one of you.” Ar-Rashid poetically expressed this reality: مالي تُطَاوعُنِي البريةُ كُلُّهَا * وأُطِيعُهُنَّ وهُنَّ في عِصْيَانِي.
