Questioner: Virtuous Shaykh, some women prolong dialogue with shopkeepers with conversation for which there is no need; what is the ruling on this?
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله said:
It is not permissible for a woman to prolong dialogue with a man who is not her maḥram as this leads to fitnah (temptation), and Allāh تبارك وتعالى said:
فَلَا تَخۡضَعۡنَ بِٱلۡقَوۡلِ فَیَطۡمَعَ ٱلَّذِی فِی قَلۡبِهِۦ مَرَضࣱ وَقُلۡنَ قَوۡلࣰا مَّعۡرُوفࣰا
“So do not speak softly, lest he who has an illness in his heart should lust [after you], but speak in an honourable manner.”
She should address the shopkeeper as much as is necessary and she should not exceed this, as the shayṭān flows through the son of Ādam as blood does. How many women say that they are far from fitnah, but the shayṭān does not give up until he tempts her. Perhaps when she leaves the man with whom she has spoken more than necessary – perhaps when she leaves, the shayṭān will whisper fantasies to her, until she returns to the first man, so the first conversation is a spark and the final one will be a blazing fire, and Allāh’s refuge is sought.
Thus, it is upon women to have taqwā of Allāh, not to be soft in speech, and not talk much unless there is a need. From this – and it is a clear affliction, a tremendous affliction – is what happens over the phone; many foolish people call any number – any number he wants – so a woman speaks to him, so he says flattering words to her, and incites her time after time, then he records the conversation between him and her. This is a problem. Meaning that he will never leave her; he will put her in a conundrum that does not leave her. He records the conversation which takes place between him and her, then, when he wants the disgraceful thing, he says to her: “Either you do it, or, [if not,] listen to your voice; I will give it to your father, brother, mother, or someone else.”
Therefore, women should beware of being persistent in talking to men, as it is a danger, a tremendous danger. We ask Allāh for protection from fitan.
