A Major Sin: Injustice in Treating Wives Equally It is reported in Sunan Abi Dawud with an authentic chain from Abu Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Whoever has two wives and inclines toward one of them, on the Day of Resurrection he will come with a slanted side.” Explanation: This hadith indicates that injustice in affection and financial maintenance toward one’s wives is a major sin, as the Prophet ﷺ warned that the person who does this will appear on the Day of Judgment with a slanted side. As-Sindi rahimahullah explained: “This means that on the Day of Resurrection, he will not be balanced in regard to the two wives; one side will outweigh the other, just as it did in this world, showing partiality toward one.” Prominent scholars such as Ibn Nujaym and Al-Haytami — may Allāh have mercy on them — have classified this among the major sins.
