Can a Woman Initiate Dhihār or Declare Her Husband Unlawful to Herself? A woman asked: If I say to my husband, β€˜If you do such-and-such, you become forbidden to me as my father is forbidden to me,’ what is the ruling on this? Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah replied: β€œWhen a woman declares her husband forbidden to her or likens him to one of her mahrams, the ruling is that of an oath (yamin), not dhhihar. Dhhihar is a ruling specific to husbands regarding their wives, as explicitly stated in the Qur'ān. Therefore, the woman must perform the expiation (kaffārah) for breaking an oath.” Source: Fatāwa Islamiyyah (3/301)
