Can a Woman Initiate DhihΔr or Declare Her Husband Unlawful to Herself?
A woman asked: If I say to my husband, βIf you do such-and-such, you become forbidden to me as my father is forbidden to me,β what is the ruling on this?
Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah replied:
βWhen a woman declares her husband forbidden to her or likens him to one of her mahrams, the ruling is that of an oath (yamin), not dhhihar. Dhhihar is a ruling specific to husbands regarding their wives, as explicitly stated in the Qur'Δn.
Therefore, the woman must perform the expiation (kaffΔrah) for breaking an oath.β
