Jealousy That Pleases Allāh vs. Jealousy That Corrupts the Heart Jealousy is a noble trait, an innate refinement of human nature. When governed by Shari'ah, it elevates; when it exceeds its limits, it fails and corrupts. A man may be jealous for the sake of his family, and a woman for the sake of her husband, so that jealousy becomes a firm, chaste safeguard—it preserves love, protects homes, and prevents negligence and disorder. However, when jealousy mixes with desire, is nourished by suspicion, and is left unchecked by reason or divine guidance, it transforms into a destructive obsession—a fire that leaves neither wisdom in the heart nor tranquility in the home. The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is jealousy that Allāh loves, and jealousy that Allāh dislikes. The jealousy that Allāh loves is in matters of suspicion; the jealousy that He dislikes is in matters without suspicion.” [Reported by An-Nasā’i 2559, authenticated by Al-Albāni] How just is this measure! Jealousy for Allāh, exercised rightly, brings preservation and righteousness; jealousy based on suspicion, without proof, brings corruption and discord. Some people make their jealousy a religion in itself—they count every breath of the one they love, follow every glance, trace every whisper of doubt—ultimately killing affection while believing they are protecting it. Thus, the beloved becomes suspected, the home becomes a prison, and life turns into a bitter psychological struggle. This is not the praiseworthy jealousy! The jealousy Allāh loves is that which defends truth, not suspicion; which is rooted in firmness, not recklessness; which builds trust, not destroys it. Regulate your jealousy as one regulates fire on a hearth: it should illuminate and warm, but not burn. Make it for Allāh, not for desire. How wasteful is the one who ruins his life in the name of protection, and how unjust is the one who wrongs those he loves in the name of jealousy! If you want your jealousy to be a blessing, measure it with faith and reason.
