What's the Proper Way for Women to Correct the Imam During Prayer? The basis for this discussion is the following แธฅadฤซth: Sahl ibn Saโ€˜d As-Sฤโ€˜di (may Allฤh be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allฤh ๏ทบ went to Banu สฟAmr ibn สฟAwf to reconcile a matter between them. When it was time for prayer, the muโ€™adhdhin went to Abลซ Bakr and asked if he would lead the people in prayer. He agreed and began praying. The Prophet ๏ทบ arrived while the people in prayer. People clapped (to get attention), but Abลซ Bakr did not turn. When the clapping became louder, he looked and saw the Prophet ๏ทบ. The Prophet ๏ทบ signalled him to stay in his place. Abลซ Bakr then raised his hands and praised Allฤh for what the Prophet ๏ทบ had instructed him to do. He waited until he joined the row properly, then the Prophet ๏ทบ led the prayer. After the prayer, the Prophet ๏ทบ asked Abลซ Bakr why he did not continue when instructed. Abลซ Bakr replied that it was not fitting for the son of Abลซ Quแธฅฤfah to lead while the Prophet ๏ทบ was present. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: โ€œI saw that most of you were clapping. Whoever is disturbed in prayer should say Subแธฅฤn Allฤh. Clapping is only for women.โ€ [Reported by Al-Bukhฤrฤซ 652 and Muslim 421] And in another wording of Al-Bukhari (7190), he ๏ทบ said: ((ุฅูุฐูŽุง ุฑูŽุงุจูŽูƒูู…ู’ ุฃูŽู…ู’ุฑูŒุŒ ููŽู„ู’ูŠูุณูŽุจู‘ูุญู ุงู„ุฑู‘ูุฌูŽุงู„ูุŒ ูˆูŽู„ู’ูŠูุตูŽูู‘ูุญู ุงู„ู†ู‘ูุณูŽุงุกู)) โ€˜If a matter confuses you, let the men perform tasbih, and let the women clap.โ€™ This แธฅadฤซth indicates that men correct the Imam by saying "subแธฅฤnallฤh" aloud, while women do so by clapping. --------------- How should she clap? Ibn Rajab raแธฅimahullฤh explains: โ€œA womanโ€™s clapping means striking the back of one hand against the palm of the other. This is how our scholars, the Shafiโ€˜is, and others have explained it. They said a woman should not strike palm to palm; if she does, it is disliked.โ€ [Fat-h Al-Bฤrฤซ, 9/311] If a woman says "subแธฅฤnallฤh" instead of clapping, will this invalidate her prayer? No, it's simply disliked. Waliy Ad-Deen Al-Iraqi rahimahullah said: "Even if a woman does not follow the usual etiquette for women in prayer and says โ€œSubแธฅฤnallฤhโ€, her prayer is not invalid. However, if she does this quietly so that no one hears, it is not a proper way to notify others of the intended objective. But if she does it aloud so that those she wants to inform can hear, then what should be said is: * If it's directed to a woman or a male relative (maแธฅram), there is no dislike. * If it's directed to a non-related man (ajnabi), it is disliked, and some say it is prohibited, considering her voice as โ€˜awrah..." [แนฌarแธฅ At-Tathrฤซb, 2/248โ€“249] --------------- What if a woman is praying behind a female Imam, or the Imam is her mahram, with no non mahram men present? If a woman is in her home or among other women, she may perform tasbih without clapping, because the prohibition against tasbih applies only in the presence of men. Az-Zarkashฤซ rahimahullah stated: "Clapping has been permitted for women. Its proper context is when non mahram men are present. If women or close male relatives are present, she may say Subแธฅฤnallฤh aloud, similar to reciting Qur'ฤn aloud in their presence." [Mughni Al-Muแธฅtฤj, 1/418] โ€˜Aโ€™ishah (may Allฤh be pleased with her) performed tasbih for her sister Asmฤโ€™ during the solar eclipse prayer, as narrated by Al-Bukhari (86) from Asmฤ, that she saidโ€™: ุฃูŽุชูŽูŠู’ุชู ุนูŽุงุฆูุดูŽุฉูŽ ูˆูŽู‡ููŠูŽ ุชูุตูŽู„ู‘ููŠ ููŽู‚ูู„ู’ุชู: ู…
