The Ruling on Women Dyeing Select Strands of Hair (Highlights) Question: May Allāh bless you and benefit others through you. What is the ruling on a woman dyeing some strands of her hair while leaving others undyed? Sheikh Yusuf Al-Jazaa'iri ḥafidhahullāh: As for a woman dyeing her hair in multiple colours by making it into coloured streaks—this is what is known as mèches (highlighting). Some scholars have permitted it with certain conditions(*); however, the correct view is that it is prohibited from the outset, because it constitutes imitation of disbelievers and immoral women, and it is not among the customary practices of Muslim women. Allāh Almighty says: “And do not be among the polytheists.” The Prophet ﷺ also said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Moreover, it involves a degree of altering the creation of Allāh. Allāh says: “They invoke nothing but a rebellious devil. Allāh cursed him, and he said: ‘I will surely take from Your servants a specific portion. I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them false desires, and I will command them and they will slit the ears of cattle, and I will command them and they will change the creation of Allāh.’” And in the Ṣaḥīḥayn, it is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Allāh has cursed the women who practice tattooing and those who seek to be tattooed, and those who pluck eyebrows, and those who file their teeth for beauty, altering the creation of Allāh.” Among those who issued this ruling are Shaykh Ṣāliḥ Al-Fawzān (may Allāh preserve him) and Shaykh Al-Albānī (may Allāh have mercy on him).
