Characteristic of a Beautiful Woman
Seeking a beautiful woman is a natural instinct in every human being. It should be understood, however, that her greatest beauty lies in her remaining in her home—something the early Arabs used to value greatly.
A man once said to someone seeking a woman for marriage:
“Let her be one who does not socialise with neighbours, does not weaken the household, and does not stir up trouble.”
Meaning: she should not enter upon the neighbours, nor should the neighbours enter upon her, and she should not incite evil among them.
▪️ And in this meaning a poet said:
ﻣﻦ اﻻﻭاﻧﺲ ﻣﺜﻞ اﻟﺸﻤﺲ ﻟﻢ ﻳﺮﻫﺎ
ﻓﻲ ﺳﺎﺣﺔ اﻟﺪاﺭ ﻻ ﺑﻌﻞ ﻭﻻ ﺟﺎﺭ
Among the maidens is one like the sun—yet no husband nor neighbour has ever seen her in the courtyard of the home.
▫️ And Al-A‘shā said:
ﻟﻢ ﺗﻤﺶ ﻣﻴﻼ ﻭﻟﻢ ﺗﺮﻛﺐ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺟﻤﻞ
ﻭﻻ ﺗﺮﻯ اﻟﺸﻤﺲ ﺇﻻ ﺩﻭﻧﻬﺎ اﻟﻜﻠﻞ
She has not walked a mile nor ridden a camel, and never sees the sun except behind a veil.
▫️ No matter how beautiful her qualities may be, if she is not devoted to her home, then she has no true beauty. For this reason, Allāh described the bliss of Paradise saying: “[Maidens] secluded in pavilions”— meaning they remain within their dwellings.
And He said: “And with them are women of restrained gaze, with large eyes—as though they were well-protected eggs.”
He likened her remaining in her home to the inner membrane of an egg, which lies beneath the shell unseen and untouched, unlike the shell itself, which touches the nest, the bird’s wing, and the hands.
▪️ Thus, from such qualities comes what Allāh described: “Whom neither human nor jinn has touched before them.”
How sorrowful it is to see what has happened to women in these times—neglecting the home—and what has come from their guardians in terms of heedlessness, while Allāh says: “And remain in your homes, and do not display yourselves as in the former times of ignorance.”
