Overcoming Insecurities
1⃣. Accept Allāh’s Decree
Allāh has created nothing without purpose and nothing inferior. Dissatisfaction with one’s appearance can gradually lead to resentment toward Allāh’s decree.
2⃣. Beautify Yourself Within Allāh’s Limits
It is recommended to improve your appearance through lawful means, such as:
* maintaining cleanliness and grooming
* dressing neatly
* using permissible fragrances
* keeping good physical health
However, one must AVOID:
* altering the creation of Allāh through prohibited cosmetic procedures
* vanity or seeking the approval of people at the expense of pleasing Allāh
3⃣. Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others
* Do not measure yourself against society’s beauty standards.
* If you must compare, then look to those less fortunate, as the Prophet ﷺ taught:
“Look to those who are below you and do not look to those who are above you, for that is more likely to prevent you from belittling the blessings of Allāh upon you.”
4⃣. Seek Righteous Company
Stay close to people who:
* encourage gratitude
* refrain from mockery
* remind you of the Ākhirah and strengthen your self-esteem with Islamic reminders
5⃣. Reflect on the Temporary Nature of Outward Beauty
* Physical beauty fades, while righteousness endures.
* Insecurity about appearance should guide you to what truly matters: purifying the heart, strengthening faith, and doing righteous deeds.
* Perfect beauty is promised in Jannah; this world is not the place where perfection is found.
Ibn Al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) said [Rawdat Al-Muḥibbīn (221–223)]:
“Beauty is of two types: outward and inward. Inward beauty—knowledge, reason, generosity, dignity, and courage—is the beauty that is loved for its essence. This is the beauty Allāh loves to see in His servant, and it is the cause of His love for a person. This inner beauty adorns a person’s outward appearance, even if that appearance is not beautiful by itself, granting him grace and sweetness in proportion to what his soul possesses of those qualities. A believer is given dignity and sweetness in proportion to his faith. Whoever sees him respects him, and whoever associates with him grows fond of him. We witness this with our own eyes: you may see a kind, righteous man with a beautiful character who appears among the most handsome of people, even if his features are ordinary—especially if he is granted a share of night prayer, for it brings light to the face and increases its beauty.”
6⃣. Build Confidence Through Worship and Obedience
Your true worth in the sight of Allāh is not based on your appearance, but on your faith, your heart, and your deeds.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allāh does not look at your bodies or your forms, but He looks at your hearts and deeds.”
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (raḥimahullāh) explained [Sharḥ Riyāḍ As-Ṣāliḥīn (1/61)]:
“Allāh, the Perfect and Most High, does not look at His servants’ bodies—whether they are large or small, healthy or ill—nor at their faces, whether beautiful or unattractive. None of these matters hold any significance to Allāh. Likewise, He does not look at lineage, status, or wealth. The only true connection between Allāh and His creation is righteousness (taqwā). Whoever possesses more taqwā is closer to Him and more honored by Him. Therefore, do not be proud of your beauty, wealth, physique, children, homes, cars, or any worldly matter. If Allāh grants you success in attaining taqwā, that is purely from His grace—so praise Allāh for it.”
