When Looking for A Spouse, Look for Religion and Character 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb radhiyAllahu ‘anhu said: “Marriage is slavery, so be careful with regards to whom you hand your daughters for enslavement.” [Al-Fatāwa al-Kubrā, 3/148] Shaikh Albani rahimahullah said: “Just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has ordered the khātib (i.e., a man seeking a woman's hand in marriage) to look out for a righteous woman and not look out for her beauty, her wealth, her nobility, or her lineage, but only for her religion, likewise it is upon her (a woman considering potential suitors) to look out for his religion (and) his character.” [Silsilah al-Huda wan Noor, 735, Shaikh al-Albani (rahimahullah)] Sheikh Uthaymeen rahimahullah said: “We advise the woman as it relates to marriage to not choose any man except a man who has Deen and character.
