Who Must Bear the Walīmah Expenses? Question: A questioner from Belgium asks: Is the wedding feast (walīmah) an obligation upon the عريس groom himself, or is it permissible for someone else from the groom’s family to bear its cost? Sheikh Najeeb Ash-Shar’abi ḥafidhahullāh: It is permissible for another person to cover the expenses voluntarily, whether from the bride’s family or otherwise. Note: Each of the two spouses at their wedding is referred to as عروس (bride/groom). As for the term عريس (groom), it is colloquial.
