How to Wash the Deceased Note: It is obligatory that men wash deceased males and women wash deceased females, except in the cases permitted by Shari'ah β€” such as a husband washing his wife, or a wife washing her husband. The procedure for washing the deceased is as follows: 1. Gently undress the body while ensuring that the body remains covered between the navel and knees 2. Make sure the body is lying flat on the back facing upwards 3. Raise the head slightly, close to a sitting position, and press the abdomen gently to expel any impurities, and carefully wash away whatever exits. 4. Wrap a cloth around your hand, or wear gloves, and clean the private parts from under the towel without looking. 5. Make the intention for Ghusl and says β€œBismillah” (in the name of Allah), 6. Perform ablution for the deceased as is done for prayer β€” except that no water should be allowed to enter the mouth or nose. Instead, you should use a finger wrapped in a damp cloth to wipe and clean the teeth and nostrils. 7. Prepare warm water mixed with some sidr (lotus leaves) or any suitable cleansing agent such as soap. You will use this for all washes. 8. Begin by washing the right side of the body first β€” starting from the right side of the neck, then the right arm from shoulder to hand, followed by the right side of the chest, the right flank, thigh, leg, and foot. 9. Turn the body onto the left side so that the right side of the back may be washed, but the body should not be turned onto its face. 10. Next, the left side of the body is washed β€” first from the front, then from the back, as you did with the right side β€” and finally water is poured over the entire body. 11. The body should be washed an odd number of times β€” three, five, seven, or more if needed. The obligatory minimum is three washes, based on the statement of the Prophet ο·Ί to Umm β€˜Atiyyah: β€œWash her three times…” If further washing is required, it is permissible, provided that the total number remains odd. 12. It is recommended that some perfume, preferably camphor, be added to the water in the final wash. Camphor is beneficial because, as scholars have mentioned, its fragrance repels insects. 13. After washing, dry the body with a cloth or similar material. 14. It is recommended to braid a woman’s hair into three sectionsβ€”one down the centre and one on each side. Most of these procedures are established by the authentic narration of Umm β€˜Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) concerning the washing of the daughter of the Prophet ο·Ί. And Allāh knows best.
