The Obligation of a Wife to Show Kindness to Her Husbandβs Family
Question: Is a married woman at fault if she does not treat her husbandβs family kindly?
Is she obligated to show kindness and assist them in their tasks, or is it permissible for her to use cunning or avoidance to evade such duties? Does she also have the right to refuse any request from her husbandβs family to perform an act of kindness, similar to what is customary among other women?
And is the reward or punishment for those who act in this way proportionate to their deeds, according to the principle βas you judge, so shall you be judged,β or is this a separate matter?
Sheikh Najeeb Ash-Sharβabi αΈ₯afidhahullΔh:
A womanβs kindness toward her husbandβs family, to the extent that she is able, is part of fulfilling her obligations to her husband, especially to his parents. The Prophet ο·Ί said: βDeal with people with good character.β
Therefore, she should assist her husband in showing respect and kindness to his parents and relatives to the best of her ability. The reward is commensurate with the deed, indeed: βIndeed, AllΔh does not let the reward of the doers of good be lost.β [At-Tawbah: 120]
