Ruling on the White Bridal Dress Question: What is the ruling on a woman wearing the well-known white gown (wedding dress) on her wedding day? Sheikh Najeeb Ash-Shar’abi ḥafidhahullāh: This matter involves several potential prohibitions, and it is only permissible if these are avoided: 1⃣. Imitation of disbelievers or immoral women: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Be different from the polytheists.” [Agreed upon — narrated by Ibn ʿUmar, may Allāh be pleased with them both] He also said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” [Narrated by Aḥmad (nos. 5114, 5115, 5667) and Abū Dāwūd (4031), from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with them both)]. Shaykh Al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allāh have mercy on him) stated in Iqtiḍāʾ Aṣ-Ṣirāṭ Al-Mustaqīm (vol. 1, p. 478, Dār ʿĀlam Al-Kutub edition): “The implication of this ḥadīth is the absolute prohibition of imitating them [the disbelievers].” 2⃣. Seeking fame or showing off: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever wears a garment of fame in this world, Allāh will clothe him with a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection.” [Narrated by Aḥmad (no. 5664), Abū Dāwūd (no. 4029), and Ibn Mājah (no. 3607), from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with them both)]. 3⃣. Arrogance, vanity, or pride: Sometimes the manner in which such attire is worn may involve arrogance or self-conceit. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allāh will not look at the one who drags his garment out of pride.” [Agreed upon — narrated by Ibn ʿUmar, may Allāh be pleased with them both] 4⃣. Excessive length of the gown: If the dress extends beyond a forearm’s length, it exceeds the limit set for women’s garments. Umm Salamah (may Allāh be pleased with her) said: “What should women do with their hems?” He (the Prophet ﷺ) replied: ‘They may lower them by one handspan.’ She said: ‘Then their feet will be uncovered!’ He replied: ‘Then they may lower them by a forearm’s length, but no more.’ [Narrated by Aḥmad (no. 5173) and At-Tirmidhī (no. 1731), from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with them both)]. 5⃣. Extravagance: In some cases, such dresses are rented for a single night at exorbitant prices — sometimes reaching hundreds of thousands of riyals — leading to vanity and rivalry. And Allāh’s help is sought! Allāh the Exalted says: “Do not be extravagant; indeed, He does not love the extravagant.” [Al-Aʿrāf 7:31] And He says: “And do not squander [your wealth] wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.” [Al-Isrāʾ 17:26–27] The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, there are men who misuse Allah’s wealth without right; for them is the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.” [Narrated by al-Bukhārī (no. 3118) from Khawlah Al-Anṣāriyyah (may Allāh be pleased with her)]. Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (may Allāh have mercy on him) said in Sharḥ Riyāḍ Aṣ-Ṣāliḥīn (vol. 2, p. 539): “This ḥadīth contains a warning against spending money on that which is of no benefit, or dealing with wealth unjustly; for Allāh has made wealth a means by which people’s religious and worldly affairs are maintained. Therefore, spending it without due cause constitutes misuse of Allāh’s wealth without right.” Source: https://t.me/qweasdzxcmnblkjpoik/3975
