A Husbandโs Financial Obligations Toward His Wife
Question: Is a husband required to pay any kind of expiation (kaffฤrah) on behalf of his wife if she does not possess wealth of her own?
And what are his financial responsibilities toward his wife?
Are internet access and a mobile phone considered obligatory for him to provide in this era?
Sheikh Najeeb Ash-Sharโabi แธฅafidhahullฤh:
A husband is not required to pay any form of expiation on behalf of his wife, whether she possesses wealth or not.
However, it is permissible for him to do so voluntarily, if she consents to it.
His financial obligations toward his wife include: providing for her in a manner that is customary and reasonable โ food, clothing, housing, and medical care when needed.
Allฤh, the Exalted, says: โAnd due to them [wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable.โ [Al-Baqarah 2:228]
โHouse them [during the waiting period] where you dwell, according to your means.โ [At-Talฤq 65:6]
โLet a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted โ let him spend from what Allฤh has given him. Allฤh does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has given it. Allฤh will bring about ease after hardship.โ [At-Talฤq 65:7]
And in the แธฅadฤซth of Muโฤwiyah ibn แธคayda (may Allฤh be pleased with him), he said: I asked: โO Messenger of Allฤh, what is the right of one of our wives over us?โ
He replied: โThat you feed her when you eat, and clothe her when you clothe yourself or earn, and that you do not strike the face, do not revile her, and do not forsake her except within the house.โ [Narrated by Aแธฅmad (no. 20022) and Abลซ Dฤwลซd (no. 2142)]
As for internet access, it is necessary to be cautious of its harms and temptations in general โ especially concerning women โ for granting unrestricted access may lead to evident corruption. Offering sincere advice includes protecting them from such dangers.
If a wife requires a telephone, she may be given one that suffices for necessary communication, provided that it is safe from sources of temptation and that proper supervision is maintained.
