Excessive Household Cleaning Question: Some women tend to be excessive in cleaning the house. For example, the floor may already be clean, yet they keep wiping it repeatedly due to the presence of a small amount of dust or the like. Is this considered compulsive behaviour that is prohibited, or is it permissible? Sheikh Najeeb Ash-Shar’abi αΈ₯afidhahullāh: One should not be excessive in this regard, for it may be an avenue for intrusive thoughts or it may be an instance of unnecessary affectation (takalluf), which is prohibited. Allāh Almighty says: β€œSay, I do not ask you for it any reward, and I am not of the pretentious.” [SΕ«rah Ṓād 38:86] Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: β€œWe were forbidden from affectation (takalluf).” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari (No. 7293)] An-Nawawi, may Allāh have mercy on him, stated in his book Riyāḍh AαΉ£-ṒāliαΈ₯Δ«n (p. 464) under the chapter: β€œThe Prohibition of Affectation (Takalluf), Which Is Doing or Saying That Which Has No Benefit and Causes Hardship”. From this category is also the prohibition of the Prophet ο·Ί regarding tarajjul except occasionally, as narrated by Abu Dawud (No. 4159) from the hadith of ’Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allāh be pleased with him). Tarajjul refers to combing the hair; it was prohibited to do it constantly, except occasionally, at certain times or on certain days, and not as a continuous practice. The author of β€˜Awn Al-Maβ€˜bud (Vol. 11, p. 144) said: β€œThe hadith indicates the dislike of engaging in tarajjul every day, for it is a type of luxury, and the prohibition of many forms of extravagance has been established.” Source: https://t.me/qweasdzxcmnblkjpoik/3844
