Ruling on Naming a Contact ‘My Only Refuge’ Question: A woman named her friend in her mobile phone contacts as “My Only Refuge.” Is this permissible? Sheikh Rashād Adh-Dhali'ee ḥafidhahullāh: No, this designation is not permissible, as it involves exaggeration and excess. The true refuge of every person is Allāh, the Exalted. The Prophet ﷺ used to say: “There is no refuge and no escape from You except with You.” Thus, the believer’s true refuge is with Allāh Almighty. A person may indeed seek refuge in something or someone at times, but not exclusively, for that would not be correct. For example, one may seek shelter from harm in a place, as Allāh says: “If they could find a refuge, or caves, or any place to enter, they would turn to it in haste” [9:57]. This refers to seeking physical protection. However, to say “My only refuge” is impermissible, for this expression belongs to Allāh alone — He is the sole refuge of humankind.
