Ruling on Naming a Contact โ€˜My Only Refugeโ€™ Question: A woman named her friend in her mobile phone contacts as โ€œMy Only Refuge.โ€ Is this permissible? Sheikh Rashฤd Adh-Dhali'ee แธฅafidhahullฤh: No, this designation is not permissible, as it involves exaggeration and excess. The true refuge of every person is Allฤh, the Exalted. The Prophet ๏ทบ used to say: โ€œThere is no refuge and no escape from You except with You.โ€ Thus, the believerโ€™s true refuge is with Allฤh Almighty. A person may indeed seek refuge in something or someone at times, but not exclusively, for that would not be correct. For example, one may seek shelter from harm in a place, as Allฤh says: โ€œIf they could find a refuge, or caves, or any place to enter, they would turn to it in hasteโ€ [9:57]. This refers to seeking physical protection. However, to say โ€œMy only refugeโ€ is impermissible, for this expression belongs to Allฤh alone โ€” He is the sole refuge of humankind.
