Appropriate Age for Marriage A brother asks: What is the appropriate age for marrying off a daughter? In other words, when should a father marry off his daughter? Sheikh Rashād Adh-Dhali'ee αΈ₯afidhahullāh: The general principle is that once a woman has reached maturity, then if a suitable and competent suitor proposes, it is permissible for the father to give her in marriage. However, a father may take into account his daughter’s circumstances and level of understanding. He may find that she is still inexperienced in managing household affairs or lacks sufficient comprehension to properly take care of her home and her husband. In such cases, he might choose to delay her marriage for her own benefit or for similar reasons. Otherwise, once the daughter has reached maturity, marriage is recommended. It is even said that marrying a daughter at a younger age is better than delaying until she is older, since this is often healthier for her body. Some researchers have authored an extensive work comprised of two volumes titled, 'Early Marriage: Its Benefits and Drawbacks', gathering the statements of scholars on the matter.
