Is it permissible to name a girl Fātin? Sheikh Rashād Adh-Dhali'ee ḥafidhahullāh: This name, Fātin, and similar names such as Fitnah, are not permissible. This is because the Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allāh from fitnah (trials, temptations) and commanded seeking refuge in Allāh from trials and temptations. Therefore, these names are not allowed, as they contradict the Prophet’s ﷺ directive to seek refuge from such matters. Furthermore, in linguistic sources, Fātin is defined as “the devil who misguides from the truth.” Hence, this name is discouraged both because its meaning is undesirable and because it contradicts the Prophet’s ﷺ practice of seeking refuge from trials and temptations.
