Backbiting is a Grave Sin That Must Be Confronted Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah said: "It has already been established through ฤ€yฤt of the Qur'ฤn and authentic แธฅadฤซths of the Prophet ๏ทบ that backbiting is prohibited, that it is among the reprehensible acts and major sins, and that it leads to enmity, hatred, discord, and division. For this reason, Allฤh Almighty has forbidden it because of the harm and evil it brings. He, the Exalted, says: โ€œAnd do not backbite one anotherโ€ [Al-แธคujurฤt: 12]. In the authentic แธฅadฤซth, it is reported that the Prophet ๏ทบ, during his ascension, passed by a group of people who had nails of copper with which they were scratching their faces and their chests. He asked: โ€œO Jibrฤซl, who are these?โ€ He replied: โ€œThese are the ones who consumed the flesh of others and attacked their honour.โ€ Thus, backbiting is one of the most abhorrent sins and among the gravest of the major transgressions. It is therefore obligatory to guard oneself against it and to condemn it when it occurs. If one is present in a gathering where backbiting is taking place, one must disapprove of it. For backbiting is to mention about your brother that which he dislikesโ€”namely, to speak of a person regarding traits or matters he would prefer to remain concealed. ... When a person sits in the company of those who openly engage in wrongdoing, it becomes obligatory to object to their actions. If they respond and desist, then all praise is due to Allฤh; otherwise, it becomes obligatory to leave their company and to refrain from attending gatherings where such sins are practiced openly. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: โ€œWhoever defends the honour of his brother against backbiting, Allฤh will protect his face from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.โ€ He ๏ทบ also said: โ€œSupport your brother whether he is an oppressor or the one oppressed.โ€ It was asked: โ€œO Messenger of Allฤh, I can support him when he is oppressed, but how do I support him when he is the oppressor?โ€ He replied: โ€œBy restraining him from oppression.โ€ Thus, condemning his wrongdoing, offering him sincere advice, and guiding him until he abandons sin is considered true support for him."
