Halal Alternative During Menstruation When a wife is menstruating or experiencing post-partum bleeding, we know that it is ḥarām to engage in sexual intercourse. So how does one fulfil their desire during this period if they do not have a second wife or a slave-girl? Reflection: ʿAlī (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) said: “If the religion was based on intellect, it would have been more appropriate to wipe the underside of the sock instead of the top. But I saw the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ wiping over the upper part of his socks.” (i.e., Islam is based on revelation rather than intellect.) [Reported by Abū Dāwūd (162), graded ṣaḥīḥ by Shaykh Al-Albānī] I say: If the religion was based on intellect, masturbation would be ḥarām whether it was done with one’s own hand or the hand of one’s wife. However, did you know that it is ḥalāl to receive a “helping hand” from one’s wife? The proofs are as follows: ● Exception given to fulfil one’s desire through one's wife: { وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَـٰفِظُونَ (5) إِلَّا عَلَىٰۤ أَزۡوَ ٰ⁠جِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَیۡرُ مَلُومِینَ (6) } [Surah al-Muʾminūn: 5–6] ● The Prophet ﷺ said about the menstruating woman: ((اصْنَعُوا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ إِلاَّ النِّكَاحَ)) “Do EVERYTHING except intercourse.”
