Is Bleeding During the First Intercourse Necessary, and Does It Prove a Womanβs Chastity?
Question:
Is bleeding necessary on the wedding night when the hymen is broken, or is it not necessary? Is it evidence of the brideβs chastity and honour? What is the ruling of the SharΔ«ΚΏah regarding this? We would be greatly thankful for your answer.
Shaykh Khalid Ash-Sharihi (may Allah preserve him) replied:
Bleeding is not considered an essential condition for all women when the hymen is broken. The amount of blood that may come out differs from one woman to another.
It should be known that ShayαΉΔn is extremely eager to create separation between a man and his wife. He makes every effort to achieve this goal, and one of the ways he enters a personβs thoughts is by causing doubt about the wifeβs chastity.
Therefore, the absence of bleeding during the first intercourse does not necessarily mean that a womanβs chastity should be questioned. The hymen may be elastic, meaning bleeding does not occur during intercourse, as doctors have mentioned.
Also, the hymen may be removed for many reasons other than intercourse, such as exercise, jumping, frequent menstruation as a woman grows older, and similar causes.
The blood that is expected to appear is usually only a drop or two. This blood may come mixed with natural secretions, so the man may not notice it due to it being small in amount or not clearly visible.
Therefore, it is not permissible for a man to doubt his wifeβs chastity simply because she did not bleed during intercourse.
And Allah knows best.
