The Ruling on Masturbation for Men and Women Question: What is the ruling on masturbation for men and women? Shaykh Abdurraqib ibn Amin Qaid (may Allah preserve him) said: Masturbation is prohibited according to the Sharฤซสฟah, medicine, and sound reasoning, and healthy natural dispositions reject it. Allah says in His Book: โ€œAnd those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed. But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors.โ€ (Surah Al-Muโ€™minun: 5โ€“7; Surah Al-Maสฟฤrij: 29โ€“31) The meaning of โ€œtransgressorsโ€ is: those who exceed what Allah has made permissible and go beyond it to what Allah has forbidden. Masturbation is included in this wrongdoing and transgression. It has been established in medicine that masturbation weakens the brain, causes mental dullness, affects the bone marrow, and causes the body to age early. Doctors have mentioned that one act of masturbation is equivalent to twelve acts of intercourse. Greater than this is the humiliation and disgrace that affects the person who does it, because they have disobeyed Allah and His Messenger and have exceeded the limits set by Allah. Allah says: โ€œIndeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be among the most humiliated.โ€ (Surah Al-Mujฤdilah: 20) This is a promise and warning from Allah that affects the person who sins and transgresses Allahโ€™s limits. Allah the Most High also says: โ€œAnd those who commit evil deedsโ€”the recompense of an evil deed is its equivalent, and humiliation will cover them.โ€ (Surah Yลซnus: 27) As for sound reasoning, it rejects the use of masturbation because Islamic law prohibits it, medicine discourages it, humiliation affects the person who practices it, dullness affects them, foolishness increases, and abandonment of Allahโ€™s support occurs for the person who uses this bad habit. Sound natural dispositions rise above this action and refuse for a person to be in such a shameful state. Therefore, whoever feels inclined towards this action must stop, give it up, and be cautious for their own sake. They should remember the saying of Allah: โ€œThose are the transgressors.โ€ They should make Allah the Greatest One watching over them, and be a close servant of Allah outwardly and inwardly, in private and in public, while travelling and while at home. They should beware of Allah seeing them in that disgraceful condition and disliked state of nakednessโ€”Allahโ€™s protection is sought. They should not make Allah the least of those who witness them, for Allah is Severe in punishment. They should remember the saying of Allah: โ€œIndeed, the grip of your Lord is severe.โ€ (Surah Al-Burลซj: 12) And His saying: โ€œIndeed, your Lord is ever Watchful.โ€ (Surah Al-Fajr: 14) The Islamic treatment for stopping this bad habit is: Having consciousness of Allah, fearing Him, and being mindful of Him, Glorified and Exalted. Also, what is mentioned in the hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ said: โ€œO young people, whoever among you is able to marry, then let him marry, for it helps him lower his gaze and protect his private parts. And whoever is unable to do so, then let him fast, for it will be a protection for him.โ€ [Reported by Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]. And Allah knows best.
