Be a Man

Shaykh Uthaymīn رحمه الله mentioned: And it is obligatory that you be a man in your house, a man in the true sense of the word. Do not merely say you are a man while you are like a piece of wood before your family. Be a man: when you see your family negligent in a duty toward Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, command them. And if the Sharee‘ah allows you to flogging (discipline), then flog (them). When you see them opposing the Sharee‘ah in any of the other matters, oblige them to adhere to the Sharee‘ah, for you are responsible. The Prophet ﷺ has given you authority over your household: “The man is a shepherd in his family and is responsible for his flock.” Who appointed so-and-so and so-and-so (as leaders)? It was not the governor of the land, nor the Minister of Interior, nor the king, nor anyone else, Muhammad, the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ, appointed you. You are a leader in your house. “The man is a shepherd in his house and is responsible for his flock.” He did not say: “A shepherd,” and stop there. Had it been so, the matter would have been easy. And (indeed) he is responsible for his flock, so look, what will be your answer when you stand on the Day of Resurrection before Allaah? Therefore, we must pay attention to these matters before our habits and conditions are overturned into the ways of corruption.
