Ruling on Using Kohl for Beautification in Islam (Men and Women) Question: Is it permissible to apply kohl for beautification? Sheikh Rashad Adh-Dhali'ee As for a woman, yes, it is permissible, because applying kohl is part of a woman’s adornment. But for a man, no — beautifying oneself with kohl is not considered something appropriate for men. If a man uses kohl, he should only use it for treatment, such as using certain types of kohl as medicine, and there is no problem with that, but not for the purpose of beautifying himself.
