Using Polygyny as a Disciplinary Measure Questioner: Since we are talking about wedding occasions, a brother asks: What is your opinion about someone who marries a second wife just to compete with others, or supposedly to discipline his wife? In most cases, this kind of marriage fails. Sheikh Uthaymin rahimahullah: As for having multiple wives β€” is it better to have more than one wife, or is it better to have only one? Scholars have two well-known opinions on this matter. The first opinion is that it is better to limit oneself to one wife. This is the well-known position of the later followers of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him). They said that it is recommended to marry only one wife. They gave the reasons that this is further from injustice, better for the heart, and less likely to cause problems. Others said that having more than one wife is better because it brings more of the benefits intended from marriage. The opinion that allows and encourages having multiple wives is closer to being correct than the opinion of only having one. However, whoever marries with the intention of competing with others or trying to outdo them has a bad and blameworthy intention. Women are not like clothes that men wear. If other people put on a new garment, he should not simply put on a new garment too. Rather, a woman is a respected person who has her rights. As for someone who marries in order to discipline his wife, there is no harm in that, because some women are only corrected by other women. That is why it is said: β€œDiscipline women through women.” Many women may become rebellious and fail to give their husband the rights that are due to him. So he wants to ease the situation by marrying another woman. When he does so, some women become better and change their behaviour, while others become even more rebellious. In that case, he may decide to divorce her and leave her with her family. The important point is that marrying in order to correct a disobedient wife is not a problem. But marrying simply to compete with people is not acceptable. Yes. Source: https://t.me/Menzbenefits/451
