Male Hygiene & Grooming
Ikhwah, one of the keys to making marriage strong and boosting the relationship between you and your wife is mutual cleanliness and grooming. Both husband and wife need to take care of their bodies, clothes, and overall appearanceβespecially when they're at home together.
Islamic teachings are full of advice about bodily cleanliness: bathing, brushing teeth, wearing perfume, fixing hair, trimming nails, and wearing clean clothes. All of this has a huge impact on making each spouse more attractive to the other and deepening their love.
It's reported that a woman once came to Umar ibn Al-Khattab with her husband, asking for a divorce because he was messy and didn't care about his body or clothes. Umar asked her to leave her husband with him for two days. During that time, Umar sent the man to bathe, trim his hair and nails, and put on perfume. His condition completely changed. Then Umar called the wife back. When she saw him, she didn't recognise him at first and felt put off, but then she realised it was her husband, accepted him, and dropped her request for divorce. She left happy and content.
It's part of human nature to love cleanliness, enjoy good smells, and hate bad odors. Islam, the religion of natural disposition, confirms this. It requires bodily, clothing, and place cleanliness for prayer to be valid. And Islam doesn't just encourage cleanlinessβit also encourages grooming, linking it to the masjid five times a day. Allah says: "O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid."
Our Prophet, our role model, was the perfect example of purity and good appearance. He loved perfume. He would start his morning by using a toothstick. He encouraged Muslims to clean between their fingers and teeth, and warned against eating onion and garlic before coming to the masjid because angels are bothered by what bothers humans. He also said that if it wouldn't be too hard on his followers, he would have commanded them to use the toothstick before every prayer. He mentioned that trimming nails, trimming the mustache, plucking armpit hair, shaving pubic hair, and circumcision are part of natural human practice.
Allah is good and loves goodness, clean and loves cleanliness. So keep your homes clean and don't imitate others.
A man's care for his cleanliness and grooming for his wife is required by Islam and is part of being a real man. It keeps his wife chaste and stops her from looking at other men. Ibn Abbas said: "I love to groom myself for my woman just as I love her to groom herself for me."
The reason for sharing this post is because multiple sisters reached out, complaining about their husbands hygiene issues and how they'd approach them for intimacy smelling bad. They'd reluctantly go along but hate every minute. They have expressed their feelings, but each time they are ignored.
Many wives suffer in silence. One woman said: "My husband is kind and generous, but I'm too embarrassed to tell him about his body odor and messy look. I've tried hinting, but he doesn't get it."
Another sister writes: "Over time, I have found my attraction diminishing. The hygiene and grooming issues play a significant role in this. There are times when I consider initiating intimacy because so much time has passed, but then I think about the hygiene concerns and feel completely put off. I'm now in a position where I fear falling into haram."
So, ikhwah, don't take cleanliness lightly. It's part of your faith. Purity is half of faith, good for your health, and makes you glow. The Qur'an calls for it, and Allah loves those who purify themselves. It leads to Paradise. The Prophet said cleanliness calls to faith, and faith leads to Paradise.
Keep your bodies, clothes, and homes clean. Wear perfume for your wives. Groom yourself for them, to protect them and your family, and to keep your marriage strong. The wise say: whoever keeps his clothes clean has fewer worries, and whoever smells good increases his wisdom. All praise to Allah.
