A Very Unusual Divorce Case Sheikh Muhammad Ash-Shuwai‘ir mentioned a story in his book “Ibn Baz: A Scholar Whom a Nation Lost.” He said: A man from Ad-Dawadmi came to Sheikh Ibn Baz in Taif to ask about a divorce issue. The man had two wives, and he divorced both of them at the same time. The Sheikh asked him, “When did this happen?” He said, “Yesterday.” He explained: “I had guests. I slaughtered a sheep at the house of the wife whose turn it was for me to stay with her. The two houses are next to each other. While she was cooking the meat, she asked for a large plate to put the whole sheep in. She didn’t have one, so one of the children brought a plate from the first wife’s house. When the first wife saw that the plate was taken to the second wife’s house, she became very angry. She shouted, ‘How dare you take my plate to her house!’ In her anger, she threw the cooked meat onto the ground outside. Then she even threw dirt over it. The second wife came, and the two women started fighting. I hit both of them, but each one thought I was supporting the other. I tried to push them apart, and they both started hitting me! Then they both turned against me. Each one thought I was taking the other’s side. In the middle of the fight, one of them grabbed me very hard by my private parts. From the pain and anger, I almost fainted. In that moment of extreme anger and pain, I shouted to both of them, ‘You are both divorced! You are both divorced!’ And I threw them out of the house. After that, I had to go buy food from a restaurant for my guests because the food had been ruined. After the guests left, I came straight to you, Sheikh. I only divorced them because of the anger and what happened to me.” After hearing the story, Sheikh Ibn Baz laughed and said, “I swear by Allah, you are a patient and gentle man!” Then he told him: “Go back to your two wives. This was extreme anger that caused you to lose control. Divorce does not count when a person is in such a state of overwhelming anger.” ------------------------------- Moral of the story: Sometimes problems between two wives can become very serious and may even destroy a marriage or cause great harm.
