4: The Virtue of Gray Hair and the Ruling on Changing It Without Using Black
Regarding the virtue of gray hair, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
“Whoever grows gray hair in Islam, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.”
[As-Silsilah Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥah 3/248]
He also said:
“Gray hair is the light of the believer. No man grows gray hair in Islam except that he receives a reward for every gray hair, and it raises his rank.”
[As-Silsilah Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥah 3/247]
The Prophet ﷺ also instructed changing gray hair, saying
“Do not imitate the Jews and Christians; do not colour it black.”
[As-Silsilah Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥah 3/248]
He ﷺ further said:
“The best way to change gray hair is using katam (dye) and henna.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 5474]
And:
“Change this (gray hair) with something, and avoid black.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2102]
