The Precious Pearl in the Rulings of Dress and Adornment
3: Combing and Styling the Hair Narrated ʿAbdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allāh be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade excessive grooming except occasionally. [Reported by Abū Dāwūd (4159)] In another narration: “The Prophet ﷺ used to forbid Al-irfāh.” We asked: “What is Al-irfāh?” He said: “It is excessive grooming every day.” [Reported by An-Nasā’ī (5058)] Explanation: At-tarajjul refers to combing, styling, and applying oil to the hair. The prohibition is regarding excessive grooming for the sake of luxury or vanity. The term ghib means doing it sometimes and leaving it at other times. The intended guidance is that one should avoid constantly indulging in grooming; it should not become one’s main occupation, but neither should it be completely neglected.
