Supplication During Intimacy It is reported in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “If any one of you, when intending to approach his spouse, says: «بِاسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ، وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا» ‘In the name of Allāh, O Allāh, keep Shayṭān away from us and keep Shayṭān away from what You provide us,’ and if Allāh decrees that a child is conceived from this union, then Shayṭān will never be able to harm that child.” Explanation: The Prophet ﷺ encouraged making this prescribed supplication during intimacy. He mentioned that if a Muslim prays with this supplication and Allah wills conception, Shayṭān will have no power to harm the child. Al-Nawawi rahimahullah commented: “Al-Qāḍi said: It is interpreted in two ways: either that Shayṭān will not strike or possess the child, or that Shayṭān will not attack the child at birth, unlike other children. It is not taken to mean complete protection from all harm, whisperings, or temptations—this is Al-Qāḍi’s explanation.” [Sharh An-Nawawi ‘ala Muslim, 10/5] Benefit: The Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Ifta’ stated that the supplication is prescribed for the man, and if the woman supplicates in this manner, it is permissible, since the default ruling is non-exclusivity.
