Warning Against Imitating Women Reports from the Sunnah: 1⃣. From Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allāh be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ cursed effeminate men and women who imitate men, and said: “Expel them from your homes.” The Prophet ﷺ expelled one man, and ʿUmar expelled another. [Reported by Al-Bukhāri and Muslim] 2⃣. From Abu Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him): A man who imitated women and had dyed his hands and feet with henna was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He asked, “What is this?” It was said, “O Messenger of Allāh, he is imitating women.” The Prophet ﷺ ordered that he be sent away to An-Naqiʿ. They asked, “O Messenger of Allāh, should we kill him?” He replied, “I have forbidden killing the faithful.” [Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud] Explanation: * Effeminate men (Al-mukhannathīn): Those who imitate women in dress, adornment, henna, voice, appearance, speech, and all movements and mannerisms. [ʿAwn Al-Maʿbūd, Sharh Sunan Abi Dawud] * Al-Muhallab: The Prophet’s curse on effeminate men and women imitating men, and his command to expel them, indicates the prohibition of anyone whose behaviour may lead to fitnah (temptation or corruption) in religion or worldly life. This hadith serves as the foundation for that ruling. [Sharh Al-Bukhari, Ibn Battal] * Consensus of the Schools: A man who deliberately imitates women—softening his speech, altering his gestures, or adopting feminine mannerisms—is committing a reprehensible act and a sin. Such a person is considered sinful and immoral. [Al-Mawsuʿah Al-Fiqhiyyah] * Ibn ʿAbdil-Barr (may Allāh have mercy on him): “The effeminate man is not merely one known for lewd acts. Rather, he is one whose femininity dominates his nature—his softness, speech, gaze, intonation, intellect, and behavior—whether or not he engages in lewdness.” Punishment for Effeminate Men: Effeminacy (mukhannathah) is a major sin. There is no prescribed legal punishment (ḥadd) or expiation (kaffārah) for it; rather, the punishment is discretionary (taʿzīr) and corresponds to the severity of the offense. The Prophet ﷺ punished effeminate men through exile, ordering them expelled from the city and from homes. His companions continued this practice. Forms of Imitating Women (Effeminacy): * Singing and musical performance: Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allāh have mercy on him) said: “Since singing and playing the drum or clapping were traditionally acts of women, the early scholars called men who did these things ‘mukhannath,’ and men who sang were called effeminate. This is well-known in their writings.” [Majmuʿ Al-Fatawa] * Softening one’s speech or mimicking women’s gestures, such as ululation (zaghrārah) at celebrations, which is disliked for men according to jurists. * Use of cosmetics or adornments traditionally associated with women. * Wearing bracelets or jewelery on the hands. * Any behaviour, attire, or adornment culturally specific to women falls under effeminacy when performed by men.
