A Forgotten Sunnahs: Presenting One’s Daughter/Sister Marriage to a Suitable and Upright Person It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with them) that ʿUmar ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb, when Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar became aymah—meaning that her husband passed away or her waiting period (‘iddah) ended—offered her in marriage to Khunayṣ ibn Ḥudhāfah As-Sahmī, who was among the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings be upon him). Khunayṣ passed away in Madinah. Then ʿUmar ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb said: “I went to ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān and offered Ḥafṣah to him. He replied: ‘I will consider the matter.’ I waited for several nights, then he met me and said: ‘It appears to me that I should not marry today.’” ʿUmar continued: “I then went to Abū Bakr Aṣ-Ṣiddīq and said: ‘If you wish, I will give you Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar in marriage.’ Abū Bakr remained silent and did not respond. I had more hope in him than in ʿUthmān, so I waited for several nights. Then the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed to her, and I married her to him. Afterwards, Abū Bakr met me and said: ‘Perhaps you were displeased with me when I did not respond to your offer of Ḥafṣah?’ I replied: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘It was not that I wanted to refuse, but I knew that the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings be upon him) had already mentioned her, and I could not betray his secret. Had the Messenger of Allāh left her, I would have accepted her.’” [Narrated by Al-Bukhārī (5122)]. Commentary: - The phrase (ḥīna tayyamat) means “when she became aymah,” i.e., when her husband died or her waiting period ended. It is most commonly applied to a woman whose husband has died. Ibn Baṭṭāl said: “The Arabs use the term ‘aymah’ for any woman without a husband, and similarly for a man without a wife.” [Fath Al-Bārī, 9/176] - Al-Ḥāfiẓ (may Allāh have mercy on him) commented: “This incident demonstrates the Sunnah of presenting one’s daughter or female slave to someone believed to be righteous and suitable, for the benefit that may accrue to the one being offered. There is no shame in doing so, and it is permissible EVEN IF THE PERSON IS ALREADY MARRIED.” [Fath al-Bārī, 9/178] Source: https://t.me/nnnnaan/2708
