The Importance of Fiqh in Business
ʿUmar ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb (May Allāh be pleased with him) said:
«لا يبعْ في سوقِنا إلا من تفقَّه في الدينِ»
“None should sell in our marketplace except one who has understanding in the religion.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ At-Tirmidhī, no. 487; graded Ḥasan by Sheikh Albāni raḥimahullāh]
Meaning, no one should enter the marketplace of the Muslims for trade and selling—“except one who has understanding in the religion”, that is, one who knows the rulings of the religion that he cannot afford to be ignorant of, and who has knowledge of the fiqh of sales and transactions in the Sharīʿah. Such a person understands which sales are prohibited and knows the necessary conditions of buying and selling, so that he does not fall into unlawful dealings unknowingly, such as riba and other forbidden practices.
