Between Sternness and Gentleness
Speech is like clothing: it should be tailored to fit the listener and chosen in accordance with the situation.
For souls differ and hearts vary;
Among people are those for whom only sternness is fitting—restraining them and holding them back; And among them are those whose hearts can only be opened through tenderness and kindness; And among them are those inclined toward pride and status, who must be approached in a way that wins their hearts. As the Prophet ﷺ said on the Day of Conquest:
((مَن دخل دارَ أبي سفيان فهو آمن))
"Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe."
This was not an exaltation of pride, but rather wisdom in drawing hearts near and reconciling them.
Nevertheless, the foundational principle that cannot be dispensed with is gentleness; for it is the adornment of speech and the remedy for hearts, whereas sternness is an exception, resorted to only when necessity calls for it.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
((إِنَّ الله رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الْأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ))
"Indeed, Allāh is Gentle and loves gentleness in all matters."
So, O Allāh, grant us wisdom—to place sternness where it belongs, gentleness where it is due, and to reach the finest of speech and the best of deeds.
