#LIFE_LESSONS Chastity and Self-Restraint It is reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: “Whoever seeks to be chaste, Allāh will grant him chastity; and whoever seeks to be self-sufficient, Allāh will enrich him.” The one who seeks chastity (Al-mustaʿfif) is he who refrains from asking people with his tongue, and the one who is self-sufficient (Al-mustaghni) is he who does not covet what others possess in his heart. This ḥadīth indicates that whoever strives to abstain from what is in people’s hands, so long as he is not in dire need, Allāh will assist him in maintaining chastity. This is the conditional clause of the statement. Its implied meaning is that whoever debases himself before others by persistently asking for their wealth, Allāh will afflict him with perpetual neediness and dependence upon people — and that in itself is sufficient humiliation! Moreover, whoever ascends to an even higher station, namely self-sufficiency from people in both heart and condition, Allāh will enrich him out of His bounty and place contentment in his heart. However, if wealth is given to him without him asking for it or longing for it, it is permissible provision, as is affirmed in the ḥadīth: “Whatever comes to you of this wealth without you being desirous of it or asking for it, take it; but what does not, do not let your soul pursue it.” Thus, refraining from covetous thoughts in the heart and abstaining from asking with the tongue is an act of chastity.
