Addressing Others by Their Most Beloved Names
It is reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim on the authority of Anas (may Allāh be pleased with him) who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ was the best of people in character. I had a younger brother who was nicknamed Abū ʿUmayr. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ would come, he would say, ‘O Abū ʿUmayr, what has the little bird done?’”
This narration demonstrates that addressing others by their most beloved names and by pleasant kunyas (honorific appelations) is among the noble traits of character. This is indicated by how Anas (may Allāh be pleased with him) began his narration, highlighting the Prophet’s exemplary manners.
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ would call his Companions by the names dearest to them; even children were sometimes given affectionate kunyas by him.
It is also understood that the permissibility of using a kunya does not necessarily imply that the person so addressed has a child. Rather, a kunya serves as a form of honour and distinction for the one being addressed, as a mark of esteem and respect. As the poet said:
أكنيه حين أناديه لأكرمه *** ولا ألقبه والسوءة اللقب
“I give him a kunya when I call upon him, to honour him * And I do not call him by nicknames, for how ugly nicknames are!
كذاك أُدبت حتى صار من خلقي *** أني وجدت ملاك الشيمة الأدب
Thus I was trained until it became part of my nature * For I found the essence of noble character to be good manners.”
