#LIFE_LESSONS Stubbornness Stubbornness is rigidity in one's view. It is divided into two types: 1. Praiseworthy stubbornness 2. Blameworthy stubbornness The praiseworthy form is steadfast adherence to the truth once it has become as clear as the sun at midday, without wavering in the slightest, while maintaining gentleness and embodying calmness and dignity. An example of this is Abū Bakr’s insistence on waging war against the apostates and those who withheld zakāh, despite the opposition of ʿUmar and many of the Companions, and their repeated objections until it became clear to them that he was upon the truth. Another example is Imām Aḥmad’s firm declaration that “the Qur'ān is not created,” in unwavering adherence to divine law and the principles of knowledge. The blameworthy form, on the other hand, is when a person shows no regard for reasoning, refuses to accept evidence, and does not submit to proof. Praiseworthy stubbornness qualifies a person for leadership and great responsibilities, whereas blameworthy stubbornness brings nothing but harm and discord.
