Unnecessary Enquiries
Some people, when you sit with them, behave as though they are interrogating you: “Where do you work? How much is your salary? Where do you live? Is your house rented or owned? How much did you buy it for? How much is the rent? How many children do you have?”
People become irritated by this and dislike being asked such questions. Most of us neither approve of nor appreciate these types of inquiries.
So if you wish for people to like you, do not ask them such questions.
In Ḥilyat Al-Awliyāʾ, it is narrated from Sufyān Ath-Thawrī, from a man of Banī Taymillāh, who said: “I sat with Ar-Rabīʿ ibn Khuthaym (the well-known Tābiʿī) for ten years, and I never heard him ask about worldly matters except twice.”
What were those two questions?
He asked: “Is your mother alive?” and “How many masājids do you have (in your town)?”
This is how we should be. As for unnecessary questioning, it is one of the reasons people become distant from you and grow to dislike you.
