BENEFIT: Fabricating a dream is among the major sins

Question: The (female) questioner says, O virtuous Sheikh, what is the ruling on fabricating dreams for the sake of public interest—particularly with regards to one's husband, such as telling one’s husband who neglects prayer that one saw a dream about Hell in order to frighten him and make him return to prayer?
Sheikh Uthaymeen raḥimahullāh:
Fabricating dreams is prohibited, and in fact considered among the major sins. This is because if a person claims to have seen something in a dream which he has not actually seen, he will be punished on the Day of Resurrection: he will be made to tie together two grains of barley, which he will never be able to do (1).
It cannot be said that lying is permissible when there is some supposed benefit, for calling people to Allāh can never be through disobedience to Him!
What suffices us instead are the admonitions contained in the Qur’ān and the Sunnah. If this man, negligent in prayer or in other obligatory acts, is admonished by means of the Qur'ān and Sunnah, that is sufficient. If he takes heed, the objective is achieved; and if he does not, then the proof has been established against him, and his reckoning is with Allāh Almighty.
For this reason Allāh, Exalted is He, said to His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him):
"So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller. But he who turns away and disbelieves—then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment. Indeed, to Us is their return. Then indeed, upon Us is their account." [Al-Ghāshiyah 21–26]
Thus, the reckoning of creation rests with Allāh. Whoever possesses knowledge is only obliged to convey it to those who are unaware. It is not upon him to guide the people, for guidance rests with Allāh alone, as He says: "It is not your responsibility to guide them, but Allāh guides whom He wills." [Al-Baqarah 272]

(1) Al-Bukhārī (7042) narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said:
((مَنْ تَحَلَّمَ بِحُلْمٍ لَمْ يَرَهُ كُلِّفَ أَنْ يَعْقِدَ بَيْنَ شَعِيرَتَيْنِ وَلَنْ يَفْعَلَ))
“Whoever claims to have seen a dream which he did not see will be charged with tying together two grains of barley, and he will never be able to do so.”
Al-Bukhārī (3509) also narrated from Wāthilah ibn Al-Asqaʿ (may Allāh be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
((إِنَّ مِنْ أَعْظَمِ الْفِرَى أَنْ يَدَّعِيَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى غَيْرِ أَبِيهِ ، أَوْ يُرِيَ عَيْنَهُ مَا لَمْ تَرَ ، أَوْ يَقُولُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا لَمْ يَقُلْ))
“Among the gravest of false claims is for a man to attribute himself to someone other than his father, to claim that his eyes have seen what they did not see, or to attribute to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ that which he did not say.”
