BENEFIT: When Should the Congregant Recite Al-Fatiha in the Audible Prayer

Question: Should the congregant recite Al-Fatiha behind the imam during pauses in his recitation of Al-Fatiha in an audible prayer? Sheikh Yahya hafidahullāh answered: This is one of the acceptable approaches to reciting Al-Fatiha for the congregant. It applies in cases where the imam recites in a slow and measured manner (tarteel). In such a case, when the imam says: ﴿الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ﴾ the congregant repeats the same phrase immediately after him. Likewise, when the imam recites ﴿الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ﴾ the congregant follows him immediately. However, if the imam recites quickly without pauses (ḥadr), it may not be feasible for the congregant to follow along in this manner. In such a situation, the congregant should wait until the imam completes the recitation of Al-Fatiha. Once the imam reaches ﴿وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ﴾ and both the imam and the congregation say "Ameen," the congregant should then begin reciting Al-Fatiha. This approach is preferable based on the hadith: "The imam is appointed to be followed." (2) This implies that the congregants should follow the imam's lead. Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ forbade reciting behind the imam except for Al-Fatiha, as he said: "There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatiha)." (4) Thus, the congregant should recite Al-Fatiha and then remain silent. This applies to audible prayers. In silent prayers, however, the congregant may recite beyond Al-Fatiha until the imam bows in ruku‘. In summary, there are two scenarios: If the imam recites in a slow and measured manner, the congregant may follow his recitation phrase by phrase. The more recommended approach is for the congregant to wait until the imam finishes Al-Fatiha, says "Ameen," and then recite Al-Fatiha before remaining silent. Allah says: ﴿وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ﴾ [Al-A‘raf: 204] (And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and remain silent so that you may receive mercy).
