Who is a Ṣaḥābi?
Al-Ḥāfidh Ibn Ḥajar mentioned in Nuzhat An-Nadhar:
«الصحابي من لقي النبي ﷺ مؤمنا به، ومات على ذلك، ولو تخللت ردة في الأصح».
"A Ṣaḥābī is someone who met the Prophet ﷺ while believing in him and died upon that belief, even if apostasy occurred in between, according to the more correct opinion."
According to this definition, ’Ēsā ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) qualifies as a Ṣaḥābī.
Imām Al-Dhahabi (may Allāh have mercy on him) stated in 'Tajrīd Asmā’ Aṣ-Ṣaḥābah' (1/432):
«عيسى بن مريم صحابي ونبي؛ فإنه رأى النبي ﷺ ليلة الإسراء وسلم عليه، فهو آخر الصحابة موتا»
"’Ēsā ibn Maryam is both a Ṣaḥābi and a Prophet, for he saw the Prophet ﷺ on the night of the Isrā' (Night Journey) and greeted him. Thus, he is the last of the Companions to pass away."
Similarly, As-Subki (may Allāh have mercy on him) mentioned in 'Ṭabaqāt Ash-Shāfi’iyyah' (9/115):
"Our teacher, Adh-Dhahabi, once asked me: 'Who in this Ummah is superior to Abū Bakr Aṣ-Ṣiddīq (may Allāh be pleased with him) by unanimous agreement?' I replied, 'Would the Sheikh enlighten us?' He said:
«عِيسَى بْن مَرْيَم عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام، فَإِنَّهُ من أمة الْمُصْطَفى ﷺ، ينزل على بَاب دمشق، ويأتم فِي صَلَاة الصُّبْح بإمامها، وَيحكم بِهَذِهِ الشَّرِيعَة»
"’Ēsā ibn Maryam (peace be upon him), for he is part of the Ummah of the chosen one (Muḥammad ﷺ). He will descend at the eastern gate of Damascus and pray behind its Imām in the Fajr prayer, and he will rule in accordance with this Sharī'ah.'"
