The Ruling on Placing a Lost-Property Box in the Masjid

Question: May Allah bless you. A questioner asks: What is the ruling on placing a lost-property box in the masjid? Sheikh Sulayman Ar-Ruhayli: It is not permissible to announce lost items in the masjid, as the masjids were not built for this purpose. However, if a lost-property box is placed at the back of the masjid because, if it were placed outside, thieves might steal from it, then I believe there is no harm in doing so, in shaa Allah.
