The Ruling on Placing Waste Bins in Masjid Prayer Hall

9 October 2026 • 1.49K views
Question: May Allah reward you with goodness. A questioner asks: What is the ruling on placing a waste bin in the masjid to help keep it clean? Sheikh Sa'd Al-Khathlan: This should not be done, because placing a waste bin in the masjid makes this area a place where filth is collected. It is authentically reported in the two Sahihs that Aishah (رضي الله عنها) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) saw some spit on the wall of the qiblah and scraped it off. This shows that filth should be removed from the masjid. Another thing that makes this clear is that a person would not place a waste bin in his sitting room out of respect for his guests. If he were to put a waste bin in his sitting room, the guests would find it objectionable and consider it somewhat disrespectful. The House of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, deserves even greater respect. Anyone who needs to dispose of tissues or similar items should keep them in their sleeve, pocket, or somewhere similar, just as people do when sitting with others, in public places, and in similar settings. As for the House of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, it should be kept clean and treated with respect. A waste bin should not be placed inside it to collect rubbish and filth.
