We received the following email:

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته أحسن الله إليكم May Allāh preserve the masjid and its administrators and caretakers upon khayr and ‘āfiyah. I would like to seek clarification regarding the recent introduction of the donation kiosks in the masjid, especially due to the concern and worry that members of the community might feel towards this. I came across an older post containing a Fatwa by Shaykh Rabī’ Al-Madkhali رحمه الله regarding placing donation boxes in the masājid, which I have copied below: Fatwa of Sheikh Rabee' ﺍﻟﺴﺎﺋﻞ: ﻣﺎﺣﻜﻢ ﻭﺿﻊ ﺻﻨﺪﻭﻕ ﺍﻟﺘﺒﺮﻋﺎﺕ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻤﺴﺠﺪ؟ Questioner: What is the ruling on placing a donation box in the masjid? [Note: the questioner is from America] ﺍﻟﺸﻴﺦ: ﻫﻞ ﺍﻟﺼﻨﺪﻭﻕ ﺩﺍﺋﻤﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻤﺴﺠﺪ ﺃﻭ ﻳﻮﻡ ﺍﻟﺠﻤﻌﺔ ﺃﻭ متى؟ Sheikh: Is the box always in the masjid, or on Fridays, or when? ﺍﻟﺴﺎﺋﻞ: ﺩﺍﺋﻤﺎ. Questioner: Always. ﺍﻟﺸﻴﺦ: ﻫﺬﻩ ﻃﺮﻳﻘﺔ ﺍﻟﺤﺰبيين ﻭﻟﻴﺴﺖ ﻃﺮﻳﻘﺔ ﺃﻫﻞ ﺍﻟﺴﻨﺔ، ﻭﺍﻟﺴﺆﺍﻝ ﻣﺤﺮﻡ، ﻭﻻ ﻳﺠﻮﺯ ﺇﻻ ﻓﻲ ﺣﺎﻟﺔ ﺍﻟﻀﺮﻭﺭﺓ ﺑﺎﺭﻙ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻓﻴﻜﻢ. ﺍﻟﺴﺆﺍﻝ ﺃﺻﻠﻪ ﻣﺤﺮﻡ ﻭﺍﻟﺬﻱ ﻳﻜﺜﺮ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﺴﺆﺍﻝ ﻳﺄﺗﻲ ﻳﻮﻡ ﺍﻟﻘﻴﺎﻣﺔ، ﻭﻟﻴﺲ على ﻭﺟﻬﻪ ﻗﻄﻌﺔ ﻟﺤﻢ. ﻓﻬﻤﺘﻢ؟؟؟ ﻓﻬﺬﻩ ﻃﺮﻳﻘﺔ ﺍﻟﺤزبيين ﺑﺎﺭﻙ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻓﻴﻜﻢ، ﻓﺎﻟﺬﻱ ﻳﺮﻳﺪ ﺃﻥ ﻳﺘﺒﺮﻉ ﻟﻠﻤﺴﺠﺪ ﺑﻼ ﺻﻨﺪﻭﻕ ﻓﻟﻴﺘﻔﻀﻞ، ﺃﻣﺎ ﺍﻟﺸﺤﺖ ﻻ، ﺣﻴﺎﻛﻢ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ. Sheikh: This is the way of the Hizbiyyeen - not the way of Ahlus Sunnah, and begging is forbidden, except in the case of necessity. May Allah bless you. The base rule is that begging is forbidden, and the one who asks frequently will come on the Day of Resurrection without any flesh on his face. Got it??? This is the way of the Hizbiyyeen, may Allah bless you. Whoever wants to donate to the masjid without the use of a donation box should do so. As for begging, then no. May Allah keep you all alive and well. Source: https://t.me/almanhajussalafi/386 From what I have understood about the question and his response رحمه الله, is that the presence of this donation box - being placed in the masjid, it is a problem; regardless of whether it is actively taken around to collect funds or not. This leads me to contemplate over the recent introduction of kiosks in the masjid. It may appear that the apparent function of this kiosk is similar to that of a donation box; it collects funds but does so electronically.
