The Ruling on Passing Wind in the Masjid

Sheikh Uthaymin rahimahullah said: "Some people have said that there is nothing wrong with it because the Prophet ﷺ informed us that when a person performs wudu at home, then comes to the masjid and prays, the angels continue to supplicate for him as long as he does not break his wudu or leave the masjid. The phrase, “as long as he does not break his wudu,” means, according to them, that breaking wudu is permissible and something normal. However, others said that passing wind in the masjid is forbidden and not permissible. They used this same hadith as evidence, saying that the fact that the angels stop supplicating for him and seeking forgiveness for him when he breaks his wudu indicates that it is forbidden, not permissible. Otherwise, there would be no reason for the angels to stop praying for him. They also said that passing wind has an unpleasant smell. Since the Prophet ﷺ said regarding someone who has eaten raw onion or garlic, “He should not come near our place of prayer, because the angels are harmed by what harms human beings,” the same applies to passing wind, because the angels are harmed by it. Some scholars took a middle position and said that it is disliked. If a person does pass wind, we would not consider him sinful, because the Prophet ﷺ said to the person who was unsure whether something had come out of him or not: “He should not leave the masjid until he hears a sound or smells an odour.” In any case, what a Muslim should do is honour the masjids of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and not pass wind in them, because it is disliked.
