31. Another important lesson is the principle that عملُ الإنسان في مال غيره إذا كان على وجه المصلحة وإزالة المفسدة أنه يجوز، ولو بلا إذن حتى، ولو ترتب على عمله إتلافُ بعضِ مال الغير. "A person’s action concerning someone else’s property is permissible if it serves a benefit or prevents harm, even without permission." This applies even if some of the property is damaged. For example, Al-Khidr damaged the ship to prevent it from being seized unjustly. Likewise, if a fire, flood, or similar event threatens someone’s property, causing minor damage to save the rest is allowed and even recommended, as it preserves the greater good. Similarly, if a tyrant tries to take someone’s wealth, it is permissible to sacrifice a portion to protect the remainder. 32. Another benefit is that it's allowed to work on land and at sea. This is shown when Allah did not object to their work on the sea: {يعملون في البحر} “They work in the sea.” 33. Another lesson is that a poor person may still possess some property without ceasing to be considered truly needy. Allah mentions that even the “poor” may have a boat, indicating that their limited property does not remove the condition of poverty. 34. Another lesson is that killing is one of the gravest sins, as reflected in the reaction to the boy’s killing: {لقد جئت شيئا نكرا} “You have done a thing most grievous.” However, killing as legal retribution (qisas) is not blameworthy, since it is carried out lawfully without transgressing the limits of justice. 35. Another benefit is that Allah protects the righteous person and their descendants! 36. Serving righteous people—or those connected to them—is better than serving others. This is illustrated in Al-Khidr’s actions, where he explained the removal of the treasure and the building of the wall: it was because the father of the children was righteous. 37. Another benefit is that the actions carried out by Al-Khidr were purely by Allah’s decree, executed through this righteous servant. This serves as a lesson for people about Allah’s subtle wisdom in His decisions. He may allow things that seem unpleasant or difficult to the servant, yet they serve the greater good—preserving one’s faith, as in the case of the boy, or protecting worldly interests, as in the case of the ship. These events demonstrate Allah’s kindness and generosity, so that people may recognise His wisdom and be fully content with His divine decree.
