How To Deface Images The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ((الصورة الرأس، فإذا قطع الرأس فليس هو الصورة)) "The image is the head; if the head is cut off, it is no longer an image." [As-Silsilah As-Sahihah (4/554)] Note: This hadith stops at Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased him); meaning it is considered his statement, not directly attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. Instead, we have his statement ﷺ: «فَمُرْ بِرَأْسِ التِّمْثَالِ الَّذِي فِي الْبَيْتِ يُقْطَعُ، فَيَصِيرُ كَهَيْئَةِ الشَّجَرَةِ» "Command that the head of the statue in the house be cut off, so it becomes like the shape of a tree." [Narrated by Abu Dawud, 4158, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him - graded 'Sahih' by Sheikh Albani] Shaykh Hamood At-Tuwayjiri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "This indicates that the prohibition lies entirely in depicting the head. It also shows that cutting off anything else does not take its place nor is it sufficient in altering the image, even if what is removed is something without which life could not continue, such as the chest or abdomen." [I'lan An-Nakir, p. 59 onwards] Shaykh 'Abdullah ibn Humayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is known that image-making is forbidden. However, when people constantly engage in something, they become desensitised. Those who affirm its prohibition are often labelled by others as "living in the Middle Ages." This is only due to people's ignorance of the laws of their Prophet and their ignorance of their own religion. They have grown accustomed to seeing images in their homes morning and evening, at all times, and so they assume it is permissible. As for its prohibition, there are many hadiths, all of which indicate that images are forbidden.
