How Was the Prophet Able to Fast Continuously (wisāl)?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
((إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَهَيْئَتِكُمْ، إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ، وَأُسْقَى))
“I am not like you; I am given food and drink.” [Agreed Upon]
Sheikh Muhammad Adam Al-Ithyobi rahimahullah explained:
"Allah, the Exalted, truly provides His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with real food and drink. However, this nourishment does not invalidate the fast nor contradict continuous fasting, because it is not from the food or drink of this world. Religious accountability relates only to worldly food and drink, as previously indicated in the statement of Ibn al-Munīr (may Allah have mercy on him) and others. In conclusion, interpreting the hadith according to its literal meaning—without resorting to strained or far-fetched interpretations—is the stronger position, since there is nothing preventing it from being understood as such, as mentioned earlier. Reflect upon this with fairness..."
