The Condition of the Salaf with the Qur’an in Ramadan
Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Qatadah used to complete the Qur’an once every seven days regularly. In Ramadan, he would complete it every three days, and in the last ten nights, he would complete it every night.
Imam Ash-Shafi‘i would complete the Qur’an sixty times in Ramadan, reading outside of prayer. It is also reported that Abu Hanifah did something similar.
The prohibition about finishing the Qur’an in less than three days applies to doing so regularly all the time. However, during special and virtuous times — such as Ramadan, especially the nights in which Laylatul-Qadr is sought — or in special places like Makkah for those visiting it, it is recommended to increase one’s recitation of the Qur’an in order to take advantage of the virtue of the time and place.
This was the view of Imam Ahmad, Ishaq, and other scholars. The practice of many of the early scholars supports this, as mentioned above.
